Idea goes in my head. Figure out a way to make it work. Turn house upside down to find materials. Go to Michael's. Create. Neglect the world. Create. Done.
It stared with an innocent J. Crew sale email. I saw this cute little flower on a cute little top for way too much money. So, I emailed my friend Becky, who is thinking this idea of mine is 'so last year,' and got this website. I made some flowers (6- 4 sent with Sue for the Texas family and 2 are here waiting for me to wear). All my gear was out- beloved felt, fabric and glue gun. I was feeling a little empty inside, like when you finish a book and have the need for a new one. I had created, then finished, and needed a new book!
A little later I was chatting with my sister about Malyn's request for a Halloween costume (last year I bought the costumes because Eli/ Kidney Infection/ blur). This year I decided that I have to go back to the love of the creative homemade costumes, the way it should be. My heart does sing when I see someone dress up and mean it. Erik Svendsen shout out, (he was Magnum PI last year and just the full stache alone was enough to bust a kidney). SO......I tell my sister that Malyn wants to be Jewel, the bird from Rio the movie. I suddenly lost my enthusiasm for homemade. Jess suggests Pinterest. Since I do not fully understand the whole Pinterest thing she walked me through the search and BAM......
So I dropped everything.....everything.....and got to work. Back to the love of homemade costumes. I ransacked my house for all things cotton. I ripped up dress up clothes, cut up VBS bags and dug through the dirty clothes for stained shirts that I could make usable again. I suddenly was excited about recycling! When I would find something I could use I was like The Riddler on Batman 'HAHAHA' crazy eyes and all!! So, once the craft idea was put into place I got to work. Craft, craft, neglect, play on the iPad, eat this, no we can't go to the park, etc.
Do you know how much I love JoAnne's fabric department? It's almost too much for me I have to just. walk. away. I have passed by the fabric district downtown LA and glanced/browsed the rows and rows of color in awe. (Nic, let's go when the kids are in school). Being in JoAnne's just confirmed my love for printed fabric. I let Malyn pick out one fat quarter. She had an okay pick. She didn't really understand the fullness of the stripes, polka dots and prints that I just had to grab and then tell myself...just walk away. Walk away from the fabric Stacy. So I did and we went home and I got back to work. Once the wings were completed I slapped those puppies on the VBS cape from last summer and she was ready to fly!
The customer was very happy! She flew away and my project came to an end. She asked if I could drop Pixie dust on them to make her really fly. Sadly enough Miss Birdie I have none with me. She then said, 'When Dad gets home I'll be able to fly!'

15 notes:
OMG you crack me up!!!! I had no idea we were so alike but that could be my blog (if i had a blog). I now feel better about ignoring everything else to craft b/c I know I'm not the only one. :)
You're crazy. Stacy, they turned out awesome!!! I can just picture Malyn. While not giving her your undivided attention, all of that work was for her (and you) and I bet she loved that you did that for her.
Ps. I love my new flower
they are great!!! I love them--nice work in 2 days Stace. You have been busy. Let's think of your next project that will need you...
Pure awesomeness! Crafty Mama's unite!
I'm very impressed.
I can say to you all looking at this that my youngest daughter is ALL ABOUT HALLOWEEN! ALL OF IT. That kidney trouble didn't even get her down. She LOVED walking around town looking at all the costumes and commenting on each one and the smile never left her face. She was in Halloween heaven.
Good job Stacy.
I was never so crafty as you but you were with the ideas.
I'd love to go to the fabric place downtown LA when I'm there.
PS Mattie Sue wants to be an angel with a halo.
Okay, Miss Mattie Sue an angel you shall be!!!
And yes the fabric district is a block away from our friend Danielle, October when your here.
hun, i am impressed! you never cease to amaze me!
SERIOUSLY LAUGHING SO HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love love love it!!!
Um, I might or might not be addicted to Hobby Lobby so I understand your obession. Well done on the wings. If you get really sad about the overness of the project, I wouldn't mind being Jewel for Halloween too so you can make me some adult sized wings if you get really ambitious. Don't worry, I have my own Pixie Dust :)
I sure hope those felt flowers aren't so last year bc I plan to wear mine again this year!:) Love love the wings and love love JoAnns fabrics too- seems I'm at that store about once a week these days!
Oh my gosh this is soooo hysterical and SOOOOO genius!!! You never cease to blow my mind with your creativity! She will be the perfect jewel!
This is hysterical! My favorite part: The FAQ's! You never cease to amaze me with your talents. She will be a perfect jewel. YEAH for Halloween!!
